A Despicable Act

On December 2, a U.S. judge dismissed the indictment, formally ending a criminal sanctions case, against Huawei princess Meng Wanzhou.

Strangely, not much has been reported about this.

Meng deserves stronger support and louder bravos from us!

Readers would recall that Meng was arrested in Vancouver Airport in December 2018 and was placed under house arrest in Canada and had to enter a “deferred prosecution” agreement with U.S. prosecutors last year for her to return to China pending the disposal of the case.

Meng was accused of fraud and other crimes for misleading HSBC (and other banks) about Huawei's relationship with a company that operated in Iran.

U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly in Brooklyn dismissed Meng's indictment with prejudice, meaning it cannot be brought up again.

Huawei continues to be on the country’s blacklist. The most recent action was taken on November 25 – the banning of new telecommunications equipment from Huawei and ZTE because the Biden administration says they posed an "unacceptable risk" to national security.

Despise is a strong word to use. You must have felt a strong dislike for someone because you think he is bad or has no value. This is how I felt about Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau, whom the former had ordered to do the stupid thing. Yes, Biden did allow Meng to return to China under deferred prosecution arrangement, but he and his team are as, if not more, despicable than Trump and Mike Pompeo.

From the very outset, we all knew Meng had not committed any crime. Just imagine, because of America’s despicableness, a mother, wife, and daughter had to spend three years under house arrest in a foreign land. No amount of settlement from the American government can redress her anguish, ordeal, hardship, misery, and distress suffered by her.

It is a clear-cut case of attempting to frame innocents (陷害 Xiànhài) and use the system to miscarry justice (冤枉Yuānwǎng) at the highest level. In the traditional Chinese concept of justice, perpetrators deserve the harshest punishment.

While we can say Trump is not rational and erratic, we do not expect someone like Trudeau would allow himself to do the former’s biddings! The father Pierre was a great man; unfortunately, the son is a wimp.

Of course, not the whole of America is despicable. Many Americans are learned and fair, like the judge who throws out this case. They have also many Americans who are ashamed of their leaders. But we have to live with generalizations!
